Covid-19: Sen. Abiola Ajimobi health worsens, moved to ICU


The immediate past Governor of Oyo State , Senator Abiola Ajimobi , has remained Covid-19 positive two weeks after being admitted at the First Cardiologist and Cardiovascular Consultants Hospital , Lagos .
Ajimobi’ s wife , Florence , was however , discharged from hospital earlier.

The PUNCH learnt that Ajimobi, who is the Deputy National Chairman ( South ) of the All Progressives Congress, had been hospitalised since June 2, 2020 . He was said to have been confirmed positive and was managing the situation at home before the illness worsened and he had to go to a hospital.

A source close to the family said the former governor had an underlying ailment which was not unusual for men his age .
He said , “ The former governor has been in hospital for two weeks and his condition is not getting better but we are hoping for the best. The irony is that the person whom we believe he contracted the disease from has been discharged.

“ However, the former governor has an underlying ailment which is slowing down his recovery . We hope he recovers soon .”

However according to a report by Global Excellence, Senator Ajimobi, who was moved to a Lagos based highbrow hospital, First Cardiologist, after he was diagnosed of the dreaded coronavirus pandemic about 17 days ago, reportedly slipped into unconsciousness on June 8 while doctors have since been battling to revive him.

First Cardiologist was the hospital where the former chief of staff to President Buhari, Mallam Abba Kyari, was treated of coronavirus before he died.

Inside sources informed Global Excellence that when the former governor’s health deteriorated after he suffered cardiac arrest the first time and was placed on a ventilator at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) immediately, doctors attending to him were said to have recommended a particular drug for his treatment.

But the drug could not be found in Nigeria, according to sources; hence, a private jet was reportedly deployed to purchase the drug in London.

Still, sources added, Senator Ajimobi’s condition would not improve and he had to be put on the second ventilator with the hope that he recovers. “Although, he is alive, he has been in coma since he was placed in the second ICU,” the source said.

Former Governor Ajimobi, who is the deputy national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is said to be a diabetic patient, which makes his situation more precarious.

His family has yet to issue a statement since he took ill sometime in May.
