Widespread Low Turnout Mars Oyo LG Elections

The Local Government Council Elections held in Oyo State on Saturday 22 May, 2021, recorded low turnout of voters across the state.

At voting time, many polling stations had few voters, who are believed to be from particular political party, while the many residents preferred to observe ‘stay-at-home’.

Our correspondents who monitored the election report that voters did not turn up at the polling centres as expected.

Our correspondents also observed that material for the polls arrived most polling units very early and the electoral officers were seen as early 8am.

Speaking, a youth around new garage, who mentioned his name as Yemi said: “this is not election because only one party is participating and that there is no reason for him to vote”. He said they know the results before the conclusion”.

However, one of candidates of the PDP who preferred not to be quoted or name mentioned, expressed confidence in the process, commending OYSIEC for conducting free and fair election in the state.

“He said, Gov Seyi Makinde has made history as the first governor to organize an election without killings or assault on any citizens

“He concluded that people of the state love the governor and that is why everywhere is peaceful, even with the threat from the opposition party”.

The results coming in so far indicate that PDP are having widespread victory in the wards and local government areas
