Atletico Madrid win La Liga title on dramatic final day of the season
Atletico Madrid are champions of Spain for the 11th time in their history after Luis Suarez secured the club’s first league title in seven years.
Diego Simeone’s side had gone into the final day of the La Liga season two points ahead of city rivals Real Madrid, and they secured the title with a 2-1 victory at Valladolid.
Real came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1, with the visitors warming up for Wednesday’s Europa League final against Manchester United with an impressive performance.
Atletico had surprisingly fallen behind to Valladolid, who finished bottom of the table and were relegated, when Oscar Plano gave the hosts a shock lead, but with Real also losing to Villarreal – whose winning goal came from Yeremi Pino – then it had looked as though they were going to be spared a dramatic final day tumble off the top of the table.
