The Federal Government through the Federal is making plans to close down the popular third mainland bridge in Lagos.
This was made known by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukayode Popoola. He stated that consultations are ongoing for another phase of maintenance works to begin on the 11.8km bridge.
He further explain that the work will commence on the outward mainland section of the bridge and the ministry is working with relevant agencies to perfect traffic during the period.
There have been reports of some worn-out on the expansion joints on the structure, raising concerns over the state of the bridge. His statement in part:
“The Federal government will close the Third Mainland Bridge for maintenance from July 24th for 6months. Both lanes will be closed one after the other for 3 months each.
“We want to do maintenance work on Third Mainland Bridge very soon, most likely on the 24th. We may close it from 24th of July,” he said.
“We are still working out the modalities and when we perfect the traffic management plan, we will move to site.
“Everything being expected for the repairs of the bridge arrived the country, that is why we want to start the repairs now.”
Recall that the bridge had earlier experienced series of close down and maintenance works which caused motorists and other road user to seek alternative route.
